Description

Forget the crowded staircases. We'll start our ascent on the «hidden» side of the Butte to discover a secret Montmartre: one of flower-filled cul-de-sacs, historic vineyards and workshop legends.

The route

The Secret Montmartre

Departure from the bottom of Avenue Junon, Villa Léandre (a haven of peace with a London feel), a salute to Dalida and the famous Maison Rose.

The Spirit of Bohemia

The time of the cabarets in front of the Lapin Agile and the Bateau-Lavoir, where Picasso and his friends revolutionised modern art.

Not to be missed

Basilica and Place du Tertre, the Moulin de la Galette, the Passe-Muraille statue.

Descent to Abbesses

The Je t'aime Wall and the elegant Place des Abbesses.

Anecdote of the day

The Aliboron donkey hoax. In front of the Lapin Agile, Frank tells how a donkey called Lolo painted, with his tail, an abstract art picture entitled «Et le soleil s'endormit sur l'Adriatique» ("And the sun fell asleep over the Adriatic"). It was a memorable hoax designed to mock the modernist painters of the time.
